Greece: Athens
Athens is a happening place! I was amazed by all that was happening every day. At first, I thought it was because we arrived on a Saturday. Nope! Every day and night is social time. People walking around shopping, friends heading to rooftop restaurants for food and drinks, vendors selling fruit and vegetables, tourists looking at souvenirs, restauranteurs encouraging you to stop and eat at their place, musicians playing the accordion, entertainers singing Beatles’ tunes, a man doing acrobatic moves in a large metal circle, etc. Then you look up and there it is - the Acropolis.
The Acropolis, a mount that contains thousands of years of history. Structures that were erected so long ago and can be seen from the city center. I imagine the ancient times being very similar to what I am witnessing today. People in the streets, vendors, Greeks gathering to have discussions with friends, and so forth. The culture of Greece is here and now. The buildings may be crumbling, but in no way is this ancient civilization deteriorating. The spirits of the Ancient Greeks are watching over these people and somehow preserving their way of life. It gives me chills thinking about the connection. I am here amongst living history!
Here is a sample of what we saw:
